Refit of Oyster 406 Leading Wind

Leading Wind

Completed in the summer of 2015, the newly refurbished workshops at SYH offer repairs and renovation work on classic and contemporary sail yachts and motorboats using the latest in marine technology. Among current projects, including the impressive renovation work on classic yacht Cayenne, is the extensive refit of Oyster 406, Leading Wind.

After many years of family cruising on the Orwell, along the east coast and further afield to France and Belgium, Leading Wind was in need of renovation. Work was particularly required on her decks, which had suffered from exposure to the elements over the years. Highly skilled in teak deck refurbishment, the team at SYH is re-securing and re-dowelling the deck planking, as well as replacing sections of the deck planking and seams. In addition, the deck surface is being re-profiled and Sikaflex applied to the seams.

Below the waterline, Leading Wind is having her hull sprayed with Coppercoat antifoul, applied in the specialist "zones" in the SYH workshops, which include a 130ft long, two-part spray and preparation bay. Whether it is a Coppercoat spray or an Awlgrip topside respray, the process for all coating has been optimised in the workshop, with one area for preparation and one for spraying.

Leading Wind has been owned for the past 13 years by a couple local to SYH who commented, “The customer service delivered by SYH has been exceptional. We have been berth-holders at SYH for many years and it’s fantastic we are able carry out maintenance work to this extent right here in the marina.”

As well as work on the decks and hull, the team in the workshop is fitting new insulated heater ducting, installing new piping to the heads with a specialist hose to reduce odours, and stripping, servicing and re-greasing the Blakes seacocks.

On-site businesses at SYH have also had a crucial part to play in rejuvenating Leading Wind: a new genoa by OneSails, updated furling gear and rig refurbishment carried out by Rig Magic, and a 53HP Yanmar 4JH5 from French Marine.

Josh Major, SYH boatyard services manager, comments, “The refit work on Leading Wind showcases the wide array of services we have on site within the new workshop facilities. As a result of increased efficiencies, we are able to offer extremely competitive prices and we welcome anyone requiring maintenance work to contact us to find out more.”

As well as the spray and preparation bay, the workshop at SYH has a custom joinery and machine shop that has been constructed for the design and build of specialist woodwork and shipwright components.

The state-of-the-art workshop area includes specialist flash-proof and eco-friendly LED lighting, as well as heating, extraction and ventilation with full climate control.
